The Trinity School admission arrangements for 2021

Introductory statement 

The Trinity School is a coeducational 11-16 non-selective free school which, as part of the Alpha Trust, aims to provide outstanding educational outcomes for the children of north Colchester. It is a new school with an established heritage; working in close partnership with The Gilberd School.

Admission number 

The school has an admission number of 120 for entry in Year 7. The school will accordingly admit this number of pupils if there are sufficient applications. Where fewer applications than the published admission number for the relevant year group are received, the Academy Trust will offer places at the school to all those who have applied. 

Application process 

The school will process applications outside the normal local authority process for co-ordinating school offers. This means you will need to complete your LA common application form for your other choices of school in addition to a separate application for this school.

The closing date for applications is 01/02/2021.  

Offers will be made on 01/03/2021. If we have not entered into a funding agreement with the Secretary of State by that date, they will be conditional offers and will be confirmed once we have a signed funding agreement. The application form can be obtained from This email address is being protected from spambots. A copy of the Mid-Year Application form is available from The Gilberd School or can be downloaded from The Trinity School website: www.thetrinityschool.co.uk.  The completed form should then be returned to the Admissions Officer c/o The Gilberd School. 

Oversubscription criteria 

When the school is oversubscribed, after the admission of pupils with an Education, Health and Care plan or a Statement of Special Educational Needs naming the school, priority for admission will be given to those children who meet the criteria set out below, in priority order:

1. Looked after children and children who were previously looked after but immediately being looked after became subject to adoption, a child arrangements order, or special guardianship order. ¹

2. Children of teaching and non-teaching staff where the member of staff is recruited to fill a vacancy for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage.

3. Where the student’s sibling **, who lives within the same household, attends The Trinity School in Years 7 to Year 10 at the date of the application and is still expected to be on roll at the time of the proposed admission.

4. The remaining places will be allocated on the basis of the straight-line distance from the child’s home address*** to the school, with those closest to the school being given the highest priority. Distance will be measured using the FreeMapTools online geographical information system. 

Tie-Break

In the unlikely event of two applicants with an identical distance competing for a single place at the school, the place will be offered to the one applicant on the basis of lots drawn by a School Governor not involved with admissions (supervised by an independent scrutineer). However, if the children of multiple birth (e.g. twins) are tied for the final place, those siblings will be admitted over the published admission number.

Late Applications

All applications received by the school after the deadline will be considered to be late applications. Late applications will be considered after those received on time. If, following consideration of all applicants the school is oversubscribed, parents may request that their child is placed on the school’s waiting list.  

¹ A looked after child is a child who is (a) in the care of Local Authority, or (b) being provided with accommodation by a Local Authority in the exercise of their social services functions (see the definition in Section 22 (1) of the Children Act 1989).

Admission of children outside their normal age group

Parents may request that their child is admitted outside their normal age group. To do so parents should include a request with their application, specifying why admission out of normal year group is being requested. When such as request is made, the Academy Trust will make a decision on the basis of the circumstances of the case and in the best interests of the child concerned, taking in to account the views of the Headteacher and any supporting evidence provided by the parent.

Waiting lists

The school will operate a waiting list. Where the school receives more applications for the places than there are places available, a waiting list will operate until the end of the first term after the beginning of the school year. This will be maintained by the Academy Trust and it will be open for any parent to ask for his or her child’s name to be placed on the waiting list, following an unsuccessful application.

Appeals

All applications refused a place have a right of appeal to an independent appeal panel constituted and operated in accordance with the School Admission Appeals Code.

 

Monday 1st February 2021

Closing date for applications.
This is the last day for receipt by The Trinity School of the application form. 
Applications received after this date will normally be treated as late applications.

Monday 1st March 2021

National Offer Day.
Offer notifications sent to all Essex resident applicants by the Local Authority advising parents of the outcome of their application. 

If you do NOT receive a notification by Monday 8th March 2021 you should contact the Local Authority’s School Admissions Team on 0345 603 2200.

Monday 12th April 2021

Deadline for Lodging an Appeal.
Deadline by when appeals against a refusal of a school place should be lodged if you want it to be heard before the end of the summer term.           

An appeal form is available here and must be returned to the Clerk to the Independent Appeal Panel, c/o The Gilberd School.

During week of Monday 24th May 2021 – Friday 28th May 2021

Appeal Hearings

Appeals heard for those lodged by the deadline above and where possible for late appeals. 

On 24th April 2020, the Government released guidelines for schools to follow with regards to the hearing of admission appeals during the pandemic.  Those guidelines have recently been extended by the Government to be in place until 30th September 2021.  Therefore, appeals lodged by parents/carers in relation to refusal of a school place at The Trinity School will be held virtually (via Zoom).

(Appeals for applications made within the normal admissions round will be held within 40 school days of the above deadline.  Appeals for late applications will be heard where possible within 40 school days of the above deadline OR within 30 school days of the appeal being lodged.)

September 2021 onwards

Appeal hearings for any appeals not heard before the end of the summer term.

Waiting List

 

If the school is oversubscribed, The Trinity School will hold and manage a waiting list for those who were unsuccessful in gaining a place.  The waiting list will be maintained by The Trinity School after National Offer Day.

 

Notes:

Sibling** ‘Sibling’ means a natural brother or sister, a half brother or sister, a legally adopted brother or sister or half-brother or sister, a step brother or sister or other child living in the same household as part of the same family who, in any of these cases, will be living at the same address at the date of their application for a place.

Home address*** The home address is where the child normally lives. Where a child lives with parents with shared parental responsibility, each for part of a week, the address where the child lives is determined using a joint declaration from the parents stating the pattern of residence. If a child’s residence is split equally between both parents, then the parents will be asked to determine which residential address should be used for the purpose of admission to the school. If no joint declaration is received where the residence is spilt equally by the closing dates of the applications, the home address will be taken as the address where the child is registered with the doctor. If the residence is not spilt equally between both parents then the address used will be the address where the child spends the majority of the school week.
